MUCS: Hi Jo! It’s nice that you took your time ais for us. Our new section focuses on the generations, so the Young and Old. First question: What are the advantages and disadvantages to be successful so early in the music world?
Jo Halbig: Many advantages and many disadvantages! Above all, there already has the advantage that when we have all lived for 20 years now. There are also disadvantages when it is so early in the music world, there is also growing. It also means that every step will be discussed and it is necessary to know how to deal with that. But as we have personalities strong enough, it has been good enough to deal with this without it cause some damage to us (laughs). Other than that, I consider it an absolute privilege to be able to make music together for so long. We have the best youth it! We live a lot and travel a lot and I see it as an absolute blessing to be able to start only 13 years.
You make music together for nine years. How does your style has changed over the years?
It started with a simple “project for fun.” We started back songs. At first it was rather Punk Fun with texts of a young band and we wrote about what interested us. We were lucky enough like it to so many people and it captures the zeitgeist. And since we are continually trying to evolve. We have released two albums with our own label. And we ourselves have produced the new album “Ein bisschen Zeitgeist.” In addition, we work with many new effects, whether electronic elements or things harder. In general, we became much harder (laughs again).
For years you have a large community of fans. Is it a special age group or is it that your fans are getting older with you?
There is an incredible large nucleus is still there and with us every year. We are very pleased to have such a Fanbase. It’s also the ones who make all this possible, by example, working with our own label. It’s good if it continues to evolve in the same way. Maybe soon there will be two generations at our concerts, as is the case now to Die Ärzte concerts: It would at least attempt to inspire the old and young.
Your new album is out. With “Zeitgeist” is understand how thinking and living of an era. How would you describe this generation?
I find it hard to put everything in one bag. But I do not confirm statements such as “The youth of today is the worst.” The youth of today of course is very focused on the Internet, that means that everything is spread much more quickly. The music loses even more of its value, what I, as an artist, I find a shame. But today’s youth also has the most potential. No one does the same job all his life. Everyone can enter as a beginner in different areas. There are so many perspectives, it depends only on what you want to do, because in fact it is enough to use. But I also find that the youth of our day to lose “calm”. I do not think it’s really great, and that’s why the title of our album is called so. People should just relax 45 minutes and listen to our album at once. We also worked hard this time with transitions. But still, I am very happy to be part of this generation.
When will we are old in the world of music?
I think the issue of age is considered in a much more relaxed in the world of music than in sports, for-example. When you have more than 30 years as a football player, there is already good to put on the bench. In the world of music, it’s more that I admire many artists who have more than thirty, but, when I see them on stage, I would give them less. The musicians must always keep just a small part of child’s soul in their heads. There is no expiration date in the music. Just look at great artists: AC / DC, Rolling Stones, Cat Stevens .. we should make music until we can no longer do. Now I have 21 years, I still have minimum 10 years to be as old as the artists I admire at the moment. It gives me courage.
If you have the right to choose an old group or an old musician with whom you have the right to work in cooperation, which would you choose?
(Thinks) It would probably Die Ärzte, because they really had much influence on us. In the past, we also decided to sing in German as Die Ärzte. It would be our biggest dream to be on stage with them. We have already got to know them and we got along very well. Just that it was already a highlight. But then to make something together musically, here is already a whole new level. Otherwise, I’d write a song with Jimmy Page of Lep Zeppelin (laughs).
Our current MUCS magazine speaks for generations. What have you learned from your grandparents?
From my grandfather I learned to stay calm when the woman face. So he always put out his hearing aid, I always thought it was pretty cool (laughs). But I would also like the artistic side of my grandfather. He liked writing poetry and I always watched. My grandparents are very committed people, so it’s also very deeply rooted in me and I will never forget where I come from. From there I can always bring some normalcy to the business of Rock’n'Roll. And my grandmother always said, “Enjoy your youth!”
What do your grandparents to your music?
Of course they pursue this a little margin. Unfortunately, both my grandfathers could not learn that we have created a group. It would in any case very much to one of them. One of my grandmothers do not really understand what you are doing music as I think (laughs). She has 91 years and is not rock music. But she is always happy when we go on TV. So she always says: “You were back on TV with your orchestral”. My other grandmother continues this too but think I need to learn something reasonable side. Like all grandmothers.
What do you rejoice in the future and what are you afraid of?
Anyway, I am afraid of disease, I must one day perish as well. I really can not get used to the idea. Hoping that go well for a long time! What I am looking forward? I dream that when I 60, I drove along the beach promenade next to me and that there is a beautiful girl of 25 years or so my wife, with whom I would be happy married for 40 years. Where do you see the Killerpilze in 50 years?
I hope we will all live again (laughs). The best is that it happens as described in the song “Haus am See” by Peter Fox. We are all sitting in our beach house with our families, our children and grandchildren and we all celebrate a great Grillfest and maybe together we play acoustic music. Yes, I hope one day we will live it and I am looking forward to when each of us has his own family. But for now we are only at their early twenties.
And where do you believe you now in your early years in coming to Munich?
Unfortunately, the other group members do not live in Munich, there is only me. I’m still nowhere and everywhere. What is nice is that I come across because often people know me. Unfortunately I can not go out so often in Munich because we are mostly on tour. But when I’m there, I’ll often enough in “Atomic Café” in the Irish Pubs. I find the “Cord” pretty well, “Pimpernel” on occasion “Blumenbar”. But I would also frequently do not go out and sit with my friends and listening to music.
